How Maudies started…

Maudie's Cafe holds a rich history spanning multiple generations and is known for its delicious home-style cooking. It all began in 1954 when Maudie Hamilton Wilson started serving her delectable dishes, including biscuits and gravy, chicken and dumplings, and cold beers, to a diverse clientele of Austin politicos, families, neighborhoods, and O'Henry students. Initially, Maudie had planned to close down her restaurant due to her limited mobility.

You wouldn’t want to buy a cafe, would you?

Destiny intervened when Joe Draker entered Maudie's life, seeking to rent the house next door but ultimately striking a deal to acquire the cafe. In 1993, under the guidance of Roe and Pete Hernandez, along with their brother, Jorge Arredondo, Joe and his team transformed Maudie's Cafe into a Tex-Mex haven. Since then, it has become an iconic Austin establishment and a beloved Tex-Mex family favorite, serving multiple generations.
